Texas is Big, part 1

Megan & Zach at Balmorhea Lake State Park in Texas

Friday’s first destination was Balmorhea, TX. I had seen an article about a huge, spring-fed lake and couldn’t resist. Whenever I have the chance I like to swim in outdoor water. The marketing photos were lovelier than the park itself. Because it was cooler and overcast there weren’t many other visitors. Once again Zach went along with my crazy need to swim in natural water, and jumped in too. We met a young couple and their kiddos, happily frolicking. I learned that an adult sized mermaid tail swim costume can run $700, more or less.

Outside the park was a street lined with a few small eateries, two gas stations, and some RV parks. We had excellent green chile burgers at a shack shack hardly bigger than a food truck. The young, model couple (there’s always one young, model couple) sitting nearby were traveling North to Madrid and Santa Fe, so we offered some food recommendations before moving on.

Next stop, Ozona, TX, for better bug spray, a stretch, and a bio-break. We wandered around the nearby neighborhood, enjoying small town Texas. We did not join a church, in spite of numerous options.

After a gruelling drive through a Texas downpour we spent the night in Junction, Texas at a Pilot truck stop – earplugs helped my sleep a lot.

I planned today’s route to include a few fun sights. Zach cooked breakfast in the RV, fresh potatoes and the juiciest, giant red tomato from his cousin Eddie’s garden, and some eggs. Truck stop coffee has improved over the years. I think I could be a truck driver – wandering, driving, drinking coffee, seeing the country. For now I’ll stick with the job I have.
