VOTE: The debates are over. Ready?

Last night we witnessed two grown men discuss many of the issues we face in the US, and worldwide. Did they come to any agreements? Maybe. They were mostly civil with each other, which was a relief. They both sounded confident in the answers they gave, whether answering the given question, or not. Vance offered a number of creative explanations about completely fabricated statements. Walz represented himself, V.P. Harris, and the democratic platform enthusiastically, and earnestly.

Watching the two V.P. candidates interact reminded me of the friendliest kid on the playground welcoming his new bully on the first day of school. I won’t rant here or drone on about who I want you to vote for and why. This is no mystery to people who know me.

Inform yourself. Make sure your voter registration is valid. Read about the candidates at all levels. Make your choices. Vote. Encourage your friends and family to vote.

There’s a lot going on in the world these days, and we witness it through the ever-churning 24-hr a day news cycle. It’s all “Breaking News”. Our attention is coerced and our opinions influenced by algorithms and addictive media. Here are a few suggestions:

  • GO OUTSIDE
  • Talk to your neighbors
  • Volunteer in your community
  • Call a distant friend or family member
  • Sit at a coffee shop or a local bar and talk to strangers
  • Take a class and meet new people
  • Go on a road trip and listen to people’s stories
  • Connect with actual human beings outside of your usual sphere
  • Create art and share it
  • Play
