Roadblock Ahead

Just after the convoy passed…

They’re mobilizing the National Guard today to help with the hurricane disaster in Florida. We’re in Slidell, Louisiana waiting for What looks like a convoy of giant military vehicles getting on the highway east.

Prior to this we were headed west on highway 10 as other groups headed the opposite way towards Florida. Convoys of electrical vehicles. Convoys of temporary housing vehicles. Convoys of other emergency type vehicles.

It’s amazing how quickly we can mobilize when an emergency happens here in the US. I hope someone’s down there helping Puerto Rico as well. Most likely, though, Puerto Rico will have to wait until they’ve begged hard enough and until a lot of people have lost everything. As usual. I’m sorry.

POLITICO: As Ian Batters Florida Puerto Ricans Fear Being Forgotten

Based on the immediate, urgent response, and the fact that we can help everyone get through natural disasters when they occur, I believe we have enough to go around. In other words, there is no reason for people to be unhoused or hungry.

As the supposed “richest country in the world” (probably not true) we could provide housing, food, healthcare, and education for everyone. For free. We just don’t. We are poor in this way. Economic disparity occurs for no reason other than greed.

On a separate note, if you’ve never driven around the United States of America, you really should. Each state is very different, even the ones that seem like giant flat farming states. To the next. Regardless of political affiliation or economic status, the people in every location that we have visited have been kind and welcoming.

During this trip we have traveled from New Mexico, through the giant state of Texas, through Louisiana and Alabama into Florida. It’s hard to hit any other states with that route because they’re so huge. Plus, I wanted to see as much water as possible so our route kept us close to the coast. Living in a desert state where water is so scarce so I forget that this planet is mostly water.

Once again travel makes me want to travel. That was my plan when I bought this rig. My university workplace requires that I live in New Mexico. Or… that I have a NM address. Gotta upgrade my interwebs connectionisms and whatnots and soforths in preparation for going more fully nomad. We’ll see what the future brings.

It’ll all work out

Sometimes life just goes the way it goes.
