I assumed it was just Colorado Springs where musky, herbal aromas waft invisibly into the car ventilation infusing our air by surprise, but no.

And I’m not a weed smoker. To me it smells like skunk sometimes – distant dissipated skunk scent. If I happen to be with someone in a car, and that sort of odor wafts in, I ask, “skunk or weed?”

There are more skunks in the rural areas of New York and Pennsylvania that we’re exploring, so “skunk” is likely the correct response. In cities across a lot of the US the answer is “weed”.
